Each path would mark a notable ascent, but it would also bring elevated risk.
Schumer is 75, yet it isn’t clear he intends to step aside for a rising star like Ocasio-Cortez; this may well be her attempt to edge him out. “I don’t think my choices would hinge on deference,” she told The Times.
Think there are other forces at play shaping her choice: she has previously collaborated with Senator Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.), who is now 85 and would be 87 by the next presidential election cycle. He might not reach 87, and the odds are even slimmer for him making it to the ballot after 2028. Sanders’s supporters overlap with Ocasio-Cortez’s base, yet they are not identical: Sanders lends her additional credibility, particularly as she has spent years cultivating ties with certain Democratic stalwarts.
Her statewide outreach—upstate events and town halls in other New York regions—appears aimed at testing her appeal beyond New York City. That move could be interpreted as positioning for Schumer’s seat, but it could also yield strategic takeaways to inform any future presidential campaign.
On the Republican side, 2028 could be the moment for Vice President J.D. Vance, leaving Ocasio-Cortez to decide whether such a matchup would suit her prospects. Both Vance and Ocasio-Cortez share a provocative trait: they enjoy strong backing from their own camps but polarize voters across the aisle, with notably low favorable ratings from the opposition.
In the meantime, other Democrats—such as Rep. Ro Khanna (D–Calif.), who appears to have his own ambitions—have suggested the field might not clear for Ocasio-Cortez if she runs. How much difference that will make remains to be seen.

Yet this also captures a recurring issue in progressive thinking: they often underestimate the sacrifices required by a given policy and overestimate its benefits.

Shoppers using Muse encounter a sequence of pop-ups stating that its use violates Amazon’s terms of service.
- Meanwhile, a new development in migration policy: “The Trump administration has authorized or pledged at least $410 million to operationalize agreements with 31 countries, primarily in Africa and Latin America, by the end of June,” according to internal government documents reviewed by The Washington Post. The documents provide the most detailed look yet at the administration’s expanding network of third-country agreements to deport migrants.
